Spring 2009 Program: Religion Today

This spring, the Office of the Alumni Association offered an opportunity for alumni, parents and friends of the University to participate in a 4-week course on the topic, Religion Today. This course ran in conjunction with the Maclean House Lecture Series which featured four lectures on campus on Tuesday evenings in April. Dean of Religious Life and the Chapel, Dr. Alison Boden moderated this course.

This course ran from April 1, 2009 to April 30, 2009 and included reading assignments, weekly lectures, and an online discussion group. To kick off the course, a dinner and discussion was hosted on campus. Dean Alison Boden led the discussion on the topic “Religion on Campus” over dinner in the Class of 1998 Private Dining Room in Whitman College.

The four lectures took place on campus on Tuesday evenings in April from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.  The lectures touched on various topics as they relate to religion including ethics, politics, business and law. A different faculty member was featured in each lecture. The reading materials have been selected by the faculty members to correspond to the subject that was discussed in the lectures.

Dean Boden moderated the online discussion for this course. She provided some discussion questions each week, responded to over-arching themes and comments, and worked to tie all of the lectures together into a larger discussion of the contemporary issues of religion today.
