Baja California: Among the Great Whales

This trip has been completed. View photos of the trip.

January 12-19, 2008 with Shana Weber, Princeton University's Sustainability Manager. Escape from winter with a week of whale watching.

Each winter, one of the world's most exciting wildlife phenomena takes place in the bays and lagoons of Baja California's Pacific coast—gray whales arrive to breed, give birth and nurture their young. This January 12-19 you can be part of this awe-inspiring natural event. Join fellow Princetonians and embark on a 7-day voyage along the coast of the Baja Peninsula. Sailing aboard Lindblad Expedition's 64-guest ship, Sea Lion, experience firsthand the age-old migration patterns of the California grays, and search for fin, blue, and humpback whales in the crystal clear waters of the Sea of Cortez.

The Sea Lion is the ideal vessel for exploring this remarkable region. She can easily maneuver to follow whales or a school of playful dolphins. And, where Lindblad’s ship can't go, Zodiac landing craft can, allowing for an up-close and personal view of these gentle and majestic giants. You will also have the chance to kayak and snorkel in these brilliant waters.

Please note: Princeton travelers will be joined by another group of like-minded travelers on this journey.

About the Study Leader
Shana Weber, Princeton University's new Sustainability Manager, will serve as study leader for this journey.

In the newly created position since 2006, Dr. Weber is responsible for helping the University improve its environmental performance and to facilitate its emergence as a leading example of sustainability among institutions of higher education.

Prior to coming to Princeton, she served as a faculty member and as director for campus and community programs at Santa Clara University’s Environmental Studies Institute. With degrees in zoology, cultural studies, and environmental science, and an interest in ecology and photography, Weber has participated in educational and scientific expeditions throughout much of the western hemisphere, including Baja California.
