March 13-24, 2008 with Rev. Frank Strasburger '67, founding president of Princeton in Africa. Investigate the dramatic beauty, rich wildlife, and social complexity of South Africa. An optional post-trip extension to Victoria Falls (3/23-27) will be made available.

Few countries offer such a rich diversity of cultures, landscape, and wildlife as South Africa. The country also presents a fascinating diversity of modern-day political and social issues—medicine to music, science to social justice—all ripe for discussion with Princeton faculty and guest speakers.

How is South Africa coping with a post-Apartheid, rapidly-changing world filled with both opportunities and pitfalls? Engage with South Africans on a personal level and learn about the exciting work being done by Princeton in Africa (PiAf) in partnership with local communities. Delve into the historical treatment of the people and the changes occurring since abandoning the apartheid system. Meet political figures who are successfully leading a vibrant democratic movement. Visit schools where natives now have the chance for an equal education. Study the HIV-AIDS health scourge, and learn what is being done to alleviate the suffering as well as educate the populace on prevention and care. Investigate environmental issues and observe the likely effects of global warming on wildlife. The varied program takes Princetonians from Johannesburg/Pretoria to study social and political issues, to world-famous Sabi Sabi Game Lodge, to a finale in Cape Town where PiAf has several projects underway.

About the Study Leader
The Rev. Frank C. Strasburger '67 will serve as study leader for this program.

Frank first became engaged with African affairs during a three-month sabbatical when he was the Episcopal Chaplain at Princeton. Serving shortly thereafter on the boards of the St. Barnabas College Fund in Johannesburg and Medical Education for South African Blacks (MESAB), he left Princeton in 1997 to head MESAB, which was then the primary source of private funds for South Africans of color preparing for health care careers. Returning in 1999 to full-time ministry at Trinity Church in Princeton, he worked with a group of alumni, faculty, and administrators to create Princeton in Africa in 1999, and was the organization's founding president until 2005. Frank remains on the Princeton in Africa Board of Directors and continues annually to help direct fellows' retreats in Africa.
