D-Day and Beyond: Normandy to Paris

May 12-24, 2008 with Col. Kevin J. Weddle *03, Professor of Military Theory and Strategy, United States Army War College. Study the strategy and tactics behind the Allied landings while looking out from the beaches and traveling the victory route to Paris.

It is hard to argue that one of the defining moments of the Greatest Generation's lifetime was June 6, 1944. Full of struggle and valor, the story of Operation Neptune and the Allied invasion of Normandy is one worth passing on to future generations. Step back in time with your fellow Princetonians May 13-25, 2008, on a chronological exploration of D-Day from the very beaches where the invasion occurred. Stand on Utah and Omaha beaches, visit the American cemetery, and learn about the lead-up and after effects of this historic day.

Move, as the Allied soldiers did, through the heart of Normandy and on to Paris. The central portion of the program will take place on the Seine River, aboard the 100-passenger Cezanne. Join travelers from Smithsonian Journeys and their art historian study leader on the cruise and balance the weight of history with the lightness of France in the springtime. Explore gardens and galleries, sampling fine foods and wine along the way.

End the journey with two nights in Paris and be sure to stroll down the Champs d'Elysées, an area that saw much celebration when Paris was liberated. Depart from the City of Lights with a deeper understanding of history and memories of good fun and good friends.
