Cruising from Senegal to Spain

This trip has been completed.

March 31 – April 13, 2009. Infrequently traveled in modern times, take a historic route from Senegal to Spain in the wake of explorers, conquistadors and slave traders.

Experience a rich variety of landscapes and cultures when traveling from Senegal's energetic capital, Dakar, and the volcanic islands of the eastern Atlantic to the shores of magical Morocco and the picturesque coast of Spain. Join on an epic voyage March 31 - April 13, 2009, that tells tales of conquest and colonization, reveals bewitching landscapes and geological wonderlands, and showcases an amazing variety of cultural treasures. Aboard the superb 110-passenger Clipper Adventurer, follow in the wake of those who wove the intricate tapestry of history across this fascinating region.

The voyage begins in eclectic Dakar, renowned for its beautiful mosques and French colonial architecture. A visit to historic Gorée Island, once the center of the slave trade, is a deeply moving experience. Sailing northward, Portugal's isolated Cape Verde Islands claim a drama all their own: the stark and rocky terrain is contrasted by verdant interior farmlands and colorful villages. In the Canary Islands, witness two dramatically different volcanic landscapes—Lanzarote's sinuous black lava flows and Tenerife's snowcapped Teide Volcano, Spain’s highest peak and its newly designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. The mystique of Morocco's fabled cities—Casablanca, Agadir, and Taroudant—unfolds in labyrinthine alleyways, splendid Islamic palaces, and graceful mosques. A visit to the soaring, stalwart Rock of Gibraltar concludes the voyage, with disembarkation in Malaga.

A pre-program extension in Mali (3/27-4/1) showcases fabled Timbuktu and a post-cruise extension in Andalusia (5/13-16) highlights the Alhambra. During the main cruise, an over-land option allows for a visit to Marrakesh.

Please note: Only part of the space aboard the Clipper Adventurer will be reserved for Princeton travelers.
