Highlights of Tibet and China

This trip has been completed. View photos of the trip.

June 6-22, 2008 with Stephen "Buzzy" Teiser *86, the D.T. Suzuki Professor in Buddhist Studies. Experience the variety of China—from its modern metropolises to old cities along the Silk Road—and Tibet.

Within the field of Chinese history—rapidly becoming more popular with the move of China to center stage in the world economy—there is fresh appreciation of the Chinese state as a multi-ethnic empire with complicated relationships with its internal and external neighbors, including Tibet. Join your fellow Princetonians June 6-22, 2008, on this journey to sample the highlights of China and Tibet to contrast old and new, historical and modern.

Begin the journey in Beijing, delving into history in the Forbidden City and at the Great Wall. Then move on to Xian to see the impressive terracotta warriors. Then fly to the "Rooftop of the World" to Lhasa, Tibet, where you'll spend three days acclimatizing to the high altitude and learning about the unique Tibetan manifestation of Buddhism. Visits to Dunhuang and Chengdu round out the itinerary.

Our operator can assist you with any travel plans you may wish to make to extend your stay in China—from a cruise along the Yangtze to a few more days in Shanghai.

About the Study Leader
Stephen "Buzzy" Teiser *86, the D.T. Suzuki Professor in Buddhist Studies at Princeton University, will serve as study leader for this program.

His early books focused on the interaction between Buddhism as a pan-Asian religion and Chinese social life. He works with canonical texts, medieval manuscripts, and artistic materials. His most recent book, Reinventing the Wheel: Paintings of Rebirth in Medieval Buddhist Temples, includes chapters on temples in western Tibet and recent Tibetan painting. Since 1998 he has been collaborating with art historians and archaeologists, extending his work beyond traditional China to include India, Central Asia (Xinjiang province), and Tibet.

As the director of the Tibet Site Seminar, a four-year project culminating in a one-month site-seminar in central and western Tibet scheduled for the summer of 2007, he has worked with scholars and students from east and west. On our journey, he will help us further understand this east-west interchange and discuss some of the outcomes from the Site Seminar.
