April 23 – May 2, 2009, with Catherine Scallen *84 *90 S69, Associate Professor of Art History at Case Western Reserve University. At the height of tulip season, take a cruise through the lowlands of western Europe.
It was water that enabled the Dutch to expand to far-flung territories in the 17th century, the region's "Golden Age," when culture flourished on a grand scale. Next spring, as Europe sheds its winter gloom and the sensational spring flowering season is at its peak, surround yourself with intimate gardens and endless flower fields daubed with magnificently brilliant color. Join your fellow Princetonians April 23-May 2, 2009, aboard the 84-passenger, five-star M/V Casanova on a journey along the Waterways of Holland and Belgium, with their canals, waterside cities, and windmills.
See the masterpieces of Rembrandt, Vermeer, Rubens, and Hals; listen to the strains of the Dutch organ once played by Haydn and Mozart; and admire thousands of beautiful tulips, descendants of those that fostered the economic debacle of "Tulipmania" in the 1600s. Continue south to the awesome Delta Works engineering marvel that helps hold back the North Sea, before you immerse yourself in Belgium's irresistibly charming cities of Bruges, Ghent, and Brussels.
A post-cruise extension in and around Amsterdam (5/2-4) allows for exploration of the Kröller-Müller Museum and a short riverboat cruise among historic Dutch mansions.
Please note: Princeton Journeys will be sharing this voyage with travelers from Stanford Alumni Association.
