D-Day and Beyond: Normandy to Paris
May 4-16, 2010 with Col. Kevin J. Weddle *03, Professor of Military Theory and Strategy, United States Army War College.
In the company of military experts and eyewitnesses, study the strategy and tactics behind D-Day, and relive the stirring events that changed the face of the war.
Travel back in time with your fellow Princetonians to June 6, 1944, a defining moment in our nation's history, and in the lives of the "Greatest Generation" who lived it. Filled with struggle and valor, the story of the Allied invasion of Normandy is worth understanding deeply and passing on to future generations. Examine the momentous events of "the Longest Day" at the famous sites where the invasion occurred. Make your way along the cliffs above Omaha Beach, see the German bunkers at Pointe-du-Hoc, and pay your respects at the American Cemetery, where the sound of wind and gulls and the long, dignified rows of crosses create a deeply moving atmosphere.
Move through the heart of Normandy, as the Allied soldiers did, and on to Paris. The central portion of the program takes place along the River Seine, aboard the 75-cabin riverboat Viking Spirit. Balance the weight of history with the beauty and light of France in springtime. Explore the landscapes where the Impressionists took their inspiration, sampling fine foods and wine along the way.
Please note: Princeton travelers will be joined on the journey by those from Stanford Travel/Study.
