July 12-22, 2008 with Sigurður Steinþórsson *74, Professor of Geosciences at the University of Iceland. An optional post-trip extension to Greenland (7/22-25) will be available.
A land rich with geological wonders, from hot springs and boiling mud holes to massive glaciers, Iceland is home to natural beauty without compare. Explore this gorgeous land with your fellow Princetonians July 12-22, 2008, when the summer sun never sleeps.
With roughly one one-thousandth the population of the United States but an astonishing array of bird life, peaceful Iceland holds many wonders for us. And due to its position over a mantle plume, astride the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Iceland is perfectly situated to be the poster-child for geologic studies.
Travel to the beautiful Snaefellsnes Peninsula to see vast lava fields and intricate caves. Visit Glacial River Canyon National Park and Thingvellir National Park and see both Godafoss, "waterfall of the gods," and Dettifoss, Iceland's "Niagara." See coastal towns and charming villages and end the journey in sophisticated Reykjavik. Opportunities will exist to venture out on short hikes, enjoy a bird-watching cruise, and take a dip at a hot thermal bath.
About the Study Leader
Sigurður Steinþórsson *74, Professor of Geosciences at the University of Iceland, will serve as study leader for this program. Some years ago, he organized and led a tour of Iceland for the faculty of Princeton’s department of Geosciences and we are pleased to have him lead our journey.
A product of Princeton's department of Geosciences, Professor Steinþórsson is considered an expert on Iceland geology. Through his efforts with the Nordic Volcano Institute to update the Catalog of Active Volcanoes of the World he has helped to increase the body of knowledge available on prehistoric Iceland and its volcanic activity.
Among other courses, Professor Steinþórsson teaches the course "Earth Science for Foreign Students" at the University of Iceland, covering topics in geology, geography, and geophysics with emphasis on aspects of Icelandic geology like volcanic and geothermal activity, glaciers and plate tectonics, as well as physical and human geography—topics that he will help us investigate on the journey.
