The Blue Danube
September 19-29, 2008, with Scott Burnham, Professor of Music. Cruise on the Blue Danube from Budapest to Passau and cap off the musical journey in Salzburg.
Sentimentalized in the famous waltz by Johann Strauss, the Danube River has long been central to the musical life of Europe. This program rich in history, architecture, and geographical beauty will have at its core a discourse on the music that has sprung from the shores of this beautiful river and the composers who have called the area from Budapest to Salzburg their home. Special performances in historical halls and churches will be the highlights of the journey.
Compare and contrast the two parts of Hungary’s capital—ancient Buda on the Danube’s right bank and modern Pest on the left. The board the comfortable river cruiser Casanova as she glides down the Danube on a seven-night cruise. Visit Pálffy Palace, where Mozart gave a concert as a child, in Bratislava, capital of Slovakia. Spend two days exploring the cultural riches of Vienna, driving along the Ringstrasse and exploring such sites as Schönbrunn, the summer palace of Empress Maria Theresa. Taste local wines and cruise the Wachau Valley, one of the most beautiful regions of Austria. And delight in private musical performances in Vienna and Melk’s glorious abbey and view the world’s largest pipe organ in Passau. Round out the journey by spending two nights in Salzburg, exploring the sites where Mozart spent his early musical years.
NOTE: We will be sharing this journey with travelers from the Harvard Alumni Association and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
