Spain and Morocco aboard the Sea Cloud
This trip has been completed. View photos of the trip.
October 27 – November 9, 2007 Sail aboard the incomparable Sea Cloud from Spain to Morocco in the wake of Moors and mariners.
In the eighth century, intrepid Moors from Africa sailed across the Mediterranean and landed on the shores of Spain. Spreading across the Iberian Peninsula, they established a civilization whose contributions to Western culture—in art and architecture, medicine and science, and education—were nearly incalculable.
Follow in the wake of these ancient mariners, joining your fellow Princetonians aboard the luxurious four-masted Sea Cloud, as much a destination as the ports of call she frequents. Enjoy two nights in the great city of Granada, Spain, highlighted by a visit to the crown jewel of Moorish architecture—the magnificent Alhambra—before embarking Sea Cloud in Motril. Sail along Spain’s southern coastline, calling at Malaga, birthplace of Picasso; the iconic rock of Gibraltar; and Huelva, a key city in the exploits of the conquistadores. Disembark in the Moroccan port of Tangiers for visits to Rabat, Casablanca, and Marrakech.
About the Study Leader
Due to a medical emergency, Professor Brownlee will be unable to serve as Princeton study leader for this program.
The academic component of this trip will be handled, however, by a fine pairing of scholars. Inge Jackson Reist is chief of research collections and programs at the Frick Art Reference Library of the Frick Collection in New York City and has lectured widely on arts-related topics on many educational travel programs. Rob Messler, a senior lecturer in the department of history at Vanderbilt University, brings to the journey an expertise in Middle East history, Islam, North Africa, architecture, and archaeology and is currently working on a new archaeology project in Morocco.
Please note, we will be sharing this journey with travelers from Smithsonian Journeys and the American Museum of Natural History.
