Indonesian Archipelago: Singapore to Bali

October 18 – November 1, 2009. An optional three-night extension in Bali ends this cruise rich with cultural and natural history.

Lush island landscapes of idyllic beaches and soaring volcanic peaks, a tremendously complex cultural heritage, and a people devoted to the celebration of life: all are hallmarks of the Indonesian archipelago. Joy is reflected in the grace and fire of Indonesian traditional dances, an infinite variety of arts and crafts, a love of decorative splendor, and a practice of celebratory ritual that has not diminished with the pressures of the outside world. Join your fellow Princetonians, October 18 – November 1, 2009, on this cruise to these intriguing islands.

Begin the program in Singapore, modern and vibrant and renowned for its ethnic diversity. Then board the deluxe Orion and spend two days at sea, cruising from the South China Sea into the Java Sea. Take this opportunity to rest and recharge from traveling and enjoy a lecture program onboard. Approach Krakatau Island, the remnant of the one of the largest volcanic eruptions recorded in history and gain insight on the island's recovery.

Enjoy a night ashore in Yogyakarta, the center of contemporary Javanese culture, to explore the world's largest Buddhist monument, Borobudur. Visit the ancient Hindu temple complex of Prambanan, A UNESCO World Heritage site and the largest and most beautiful Hindu temple site in Indonesia, where stone bas-relief panel carvings depict the tale of a famous Hindu epic, the Ramayana. Swim and snorkel among vibrant coral reefs teeming with tropical fish. Witness the largest reptile on earth, the "Komodo Dragon," in its natural habitat on Komodo Island. Venture to traditional villages to meet local artisans and see demonstrations of mat weaving, batik techniques, and wood carving. Delight in traditional Javanese and Balinese dances and a classic gamelan concert.

Please note: Only part of the space aboard the Orion will be reserved for Princeton travelers. A three-night post-cruise extension in Bali will be available.
