Bay of Bengal: East India Odyssey

December 26, 2008 – January 6, 2009 aboard the Island Sky. Extend your trip before the cruise to India’s Golden Triangle—Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur (12/21-27) or afterwards to Kerala and Cochin (1/6-9).

The eastern coast of India is a land of vast and elaborate temples, of spices and brightly dyed cloth and of ancient traditions. Aboard the intimate, all-suite Island Sky, discover the natural beauty of the rarely visited Bay of Bengal in the wake of explorers, traders, and pilgrims. Our journey takes us from India’s rich cultural capital of Kolkata (Calcutta) across the fertile waters of the Ganges Delta, to colonial Chennai (Madras), where traditional culture and cutting-edge modernity create an exciting mix.

Learn about the continued work of The Missionaries of Charity at Mother Teresa’s ashram in Kolkata. Cruise through the Ganges Delta, the largest river delta in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to a vast array of rare and endangered wildlife, including some 270 Royal Bengal tigers. Explore the exquisite holy city of Bhubaneshwar, site of some of India’s most beautiful temples. Along the way, visit temples, walk through the capitals of ancient empires, and marvel at the artistry that continues to thrive on this fascinating journey featuring the regions’s religion, art, and architecture.
