Tanzania Family Journey

This trip has been completed. View photos of the trip.

December 21, 2007–January 2, 2008. A great inter-generational program over the winter break! A program of activities for children complements the educational component for adults. Safaris and meals are enjoyed together as a family.

In 2005, excited Princeton families traveled to Tanzania and experienced the timeless beauty and drama of Africa together. Join Princeton over the winter holiday period December 21, 2007–January 2, 2008, and learn with your family in three distinct wildlife areas.

Tarangire National Park, with its astonishing diversity of landscape, is home to many elephants and other migratory animals. At Ngorongoro Conservation Area, we will look for rhinoceros, lion, hyena, zebra, elephant, and hippo in the stunning collapsed caldera of Ngorongoro Crater, now a magnificent haven for wildlife. Under the brilliant blue African skies, wildebeests, giraffes, lions, zebras, warthogs, and buffalo roam the wide open plains of Serengeti National Park. Our encounters with the fauna of Tanzania will be complemented by interaction with its people, including visits to the village of Mto Wa Mbu, a Iraqw tribesman's homestead, and a Maasai boma.

From the unexpected comfort of the walk-in tents, to the popcorn by the campfire, to the kid-friendly pacing, to the exciting proximity of the wildlife, this is not your average family camping trip! Knowledgeable naturalist guides will lead your family, providing you with some of the most extraordinary game viewing opportunities in the world. This is an exceptional opportunity to experience a different world, far from crowds and away from the unwelcome distractions of our busy modern lives, a chance for your family to relax, explore exciting places, learn about new cultures and create unforgettable memories together.

About the Study Leader
This journey will be lead by William Howarth, Professor of English and Associate Faculty in the Princeton Environmental Institute.

Professor Howarth is an authority on the history and literature of travel, places, and nature. His many books and essays cover a wide range of topics, from the writings of Henry Thoreau and Rachel Carson to journeys across Europe, North and South America, and the amazing academic village of Princeton, NJ. He is former editor of The Writings of Henry D. Thoreau and former chair of The Center for American Places. A contributor to National Geographic, Smithsonian, and American Scholar, he is currently writing a study of Charles Darwin's use of landscape to theorize evolution.

An alumni favorite, Professor Howarth has led fifty previous alumni events, from on-campus seminars to the old Alumni Colleges. On this journey he will be joined by naturalist and writer Anne Matthews *81, who teaches environmental writing at Princeton.
