December 26, 2007 – January 2, 2008 with Ekaterina Pravilova, assistant professor of history. Bundle up and ring in 2008 on this program that features the Tsar's Ball at Catherine's Palace on New Year's Eve.
Spend this coming holiday season in picturesque St. Petersburg, where Imperial Russia's musical and cultural traditions are revived to ring in the new year. Brave the cold and join other Princetonians, December 26, 2007 – January 2, 2008, on this extraordinary program.
Based for six nights in the Venice of the North, daily excursions will explore both the city itself and the countryside around it. Visit grand palaces, including the Winter Palace, now home to the Hermitage Museum. See the great churches of the city, such as St. Isaac's Cathedral and the onion-domed Church of the Savior on the Blood. Attend a ballet performance in one of the city's jewel box theaters.
Cap the experience off with a New Year's Eve in style. Be welcomed into Catherine's Palace for the glittering Tsar's Ball, harkening back to the Imperial Era. Enjoy champagne and caviar while dancing the night away.
Our study leader, St. Petersburg native Ekaterina Pravilova, will help put the evening in context, as she accompanies us throughout the holiday. Providing commentary on imperialism and the post-imperial era, Soviet times, and today's realities, she will be the perfect guide for our journey into 2008.
