On behalf of the Office of the Dean of the College and the Office of the Provost, we are excited to announce “Re-Framing International”—a year-long conversation on our obligation to engage in ethical, equitable, and sustainable international research, teaching, and service. “Re-Framing International” creates a space for open and frank dialogue about how Princeton students and scholars can advance an approach to international engagement that seeks to address the structural inequalities—many of them legacies of colonialism and empire-building—implicit in the current model of international engagement. Through conversations across teaching and learning, we aspire to explore new approaches to international engagement that honor and uphold our informal motto, “In the nation’s service, and in the service of humanity.”

Our first event, “Ethics, Sustainability, and Equity in the Global Context,” will take place on Wednesday, September 22, at 4:30 p.m. in-person in Betts Auditorium and via livestream. Eminent ethicist Kwame Anthony Appiah, Princeton professor emeritus, will open the conversation by laying out the ethical questions inherent in international scholarship, and Princeton faculty members Chika Okeke-Agulu and Deborah Yashar will address these important questions from their particular disciplinary perspectives. The goal is to address the true stakes of international engagement in higher education, and how this pandemic moment demands a reconsideration of how we work with the people, landscapes, and institutions abroad with whom we engage in our production of new knowledge.
