Spain & Portugal Aboard the Sea Cloud II

Begin in Granada for an introduction to the region's Moorish heritage at the incomparable Alhambra palace and fortress complex. Then embark the Sea Cloud II in Malaga, transit the Strait of Gibraltar, and visit Seville, Lisbon, Porto and Isla Cies National Park. Experience the grandeur of the great pilgrimage cathedral at Santiago de Compostela and the cutting-edge design of Frank Gehry's iconic Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. Learn about the strategic importance of these remarkable Portuguese and Spanish cities, enjoy the rhythms of fado and flamenco, and sample outstanding wines and distinctive regional cuisines.

A voyage aboard the Sea Cloud II, which carries only 94 passengers, is an intimate experience on one of the most elegant and luxurious vessels afloat. Like Marjorie Merriweather Post's legendary Sea Cloud, she combines the seafaring elegance of a bygone era with the highest modern standards of luxury. In the grand tradition of the world's finest sailing vessels, guests experience this marvelous ship under sail as the skilled crew hand-sets more than 30,000 square feet of canvas.

About Study Leader

Pamela Patton, Director of the Index of Medieval Art at Princeton University, will be the study leader for this journey. Professor Patton specializes in the visual culture of medieval Spain and its environs, particularly the role of the image in articulating cultural identity and social dynamics among the multiethnic communities of the Iberian Peninsula. Central to her work is the exploration of medieval iconographic traditions as uniquely expressive of community ideologies, practices, and folkways that are critical to an understanding of the medieval world. Her books include Pictorial Narrative in the Romanesque Cloister (Peter Lang, 2004); Art of Estrangement: Redefining Jews in Reconquest Spain (Penn State University Press, 2012), and an edited volume, Envisioning Others: Race, Color, and the Visual in Iberia and Latin America (Brill, 2016). On this journey Professor Patton lecture on the medieval history of the Iberian Peninsula, the major painters of the Iberian Golden Age and the significance of the pilgrimage movement in medieval Spain.
