The Humanities Council, in collaboration with the Princeton Humanities Initiative, presents the 20th annual Humanities Colloquium on Thursday, Sept. 10 at 4:30 p.m. in the Princeton University Art Museum Grand Hall. This year’s event features distinguished Princeton scholars who will explore the theme, “Communities in the Making.” 

Speakers include Devin Fore (German), Katja Guenther (History), Brooke Holmes (Classics) and Beth Lew-Williams (History). The panel will discuss how communities of thought and experience are made and undone, what conditions their survival or disappearance over time, and how exclusion and othering become a corollary to belonging. 

Speakers will examine communities formed through political passions (Fore), family care and communal traditions (Guenther), networks of sympathy (Holmes), and legal systems of alienage and citizenship (Lew-Williams). The conversation, open to the University community, will be moderated by Council Chair Esther Schor (English).
