Waitlist Only: The Great Journey through Europe: Switzerland, France, Germany and the Netherlands

Michael Littman
Michael Littman, professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, will serve as Princeton study leader for this journey

Professor Littman is beloved amongst alumni travelers for his Engineering in the Modern World talks that stress the political and visual context of engineering in urban, industrialized society.

Littman is an experimentalist working in several areas including atomic spectroscopy, tunable laser design, parallel computer design, space telescope design, and recently STEM education. For the past 10 years he has been studying the research and teaching devices used by Professor Joseph Henry at the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) in the early 19th century. Professor Littman is a fellow of the Optical Society of America (OSA) and in 2010 he received the OSA Paul Forman Award in recognition for his designs of tunable lasers. In 2015, he was the recipient of the Princeton University School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) award for distinguished teaching.

About the Journey

Four countries, eight cities, two rivers, three trains – this adventure has it all! The journey begins in Amsterdam with a six‑night cruise down both the Rhine and Moselle rivers aboard the elegant small river ship Amadeus Imperial. Ports of call include Cologne, Koblenz, and Hiedelberg, Germany; Strasbourg, France; and Basel, Switzerland. Next, spend two nights at the five-star Hotel Schweizerhof Luzern on the banks of Lake Lucerne, Switzerland, and two nights at the sophisticated Hotel Schweizerhof Zermatt. While touring the Swiss Alps, experience three legendary railways — the Gornergrat Bahn, with breathtaking views of the Matterhorn; Glacier Express, a panoramic journey from Andermatt to Zermatt; and Pilatus, the world’s steepest cogwheel train.

Please note: Princeton travelers will be joined by those from like-minded institutions.
