For veteran Luke Hixson ’25, Princeton was the ‘bridge between military service and future service as a physician’

U.S. Navy veteran Luke Hixson ’25 is driven to serve — his country and patients. Growing up in Knoxville, Tennessee, Hixson didn’t know what he wanted to do after graduating high school since his family couldn’t afford college, so they encouraged him to join the military. When he was 17, he enlisted in the Navy where he spent five years taking care of wounded Marines as a hospital corpsman.

During his deployment, he realized he wanted to be a physician and with the help of nonprofit organizations like Service to School he applied and was admitted to Princeton University — at no cost to him. After earning his bachelor’s degree in neuroscience from Princeton, Hixson was accepted to Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Hixson is one of many examples of how Princeton supports America’s veterans and creates leaders “in the nation’s service and in the service of humanity.”
