Alumni discussion groups get new name and new home

Do you need housing leads in your area? Maybe you are looking for parenting tips, need to build your network as you pursue a career in a specific industry, or want to discuss current events? Conversations on these topics of shared interest, among many others, are open to all alumni on a new and improved TigerNet under the new name “TigerNet Forums.”

Previously called alumni discussion groups since they were launched a decade ago, the forums will be available on a new platform on TigerNet beginning Aug. 14. Alumni can continue to log in to the platform with their TigerNet ID and password.

The TigerNet forums will retain the previous functionality of alumni discussion groups but with a refreshed look and new features. Alumni can initiate new topics within their forums and will now be able to upload photos, videos and documents within their posts. Users can also continue to respond to conversations by email and can modulate the frequency of notifications, with the options of immediately, daily or weekly.

Based on feedback from the Communications and Technology Committee of the Princeton University Alumni Council, new forum categories will include:

  • Athletics
  • Careers and Professional
  • Culture and Religion
  • Eating Clubs and Co-ops
  • Home and Family
  • Performing and Fine Arts
  • Regional
  • Other Tiger Topics

More than 170 forums will join the 140-plus alumni group websites — including class, regions and affinity group sites — that currently reside on the TigerNet platform, providing easier navigation among all alumni communication tools. Coming this fall, the platform will also house the new Alumni Directory, which will include similar features to LinkedIn.

“We are excited to have all of our communications tools on one platform and anticipate an improved experience that will inspire more alumni to connect with one another,” said Jennifer Caputo, deputy vice president for Alumni Engagement. “We are grateful to the Princetonians who helped test the platform and who provided invaluable feedback.”

Ongoing alumni conversations in active discussion groups on the previous platform will be migrated to the new TigerNet Forums. As the discussion groups are migrated to the new platform, there will be a brief “blackout” period beginning on August 12 at noon ET during which group discussions will be paused until they go live on the new platform on August 14 at 9 a.m. ET. Alumni can join as many TigerNet forums as they would like, and all forums are open to all alumni. Alumni interested in initiating a new forum can contact learntigernet2@princeton.edu

Alumni should familiarize themselves with the TigerNet policy to ensure that they understand what activities are inappropriate for use on TigerNet, such as commercial or political solicitations, and the requirements for civil discourse. Each forum has an alumni group moderator who works with University and TigerNet administrators to implement the policy.
