Princeton, America’s Campus (1890s-1990s)

Art Historian and Author of Princeton, America’s Campus, W. Barksdale Maynard '88

W. Barksdale Maynard '88 taught architectural history in Princeton’s Department of Art and Archaeology and at the School of Architecture from 2007-2015. A prolific writer, Maynard has eight books to his name, including Princeton, America’s Campus (Penn State University Press, 2012), which weaves together the social and architectural history of the iconic University. Other titles include Architecture in the United States, 1800-1850 (Yale University Press, 2002); Woodrow Wilson: Princeton to the Presidency (Yale University Press, 2008); and most recently, Artists of Wyeth Country (Temple University Press, 2021). During his years at Princeton, Dr. Maynard wrote more than 100 articles for Princeton Alumni Weekly and gave highly popular campus walking tours during Reunions.

From Nassau Hall to Lewis Library; Rocky College to Frick Chemistry Lab; Princeton’s campus has ceaselessly evolved, passing through a series of distinct architectural identities. This lecture will discuss the transformation of Princeton’s idyllic campus through its 20th century phases: Victorian, Collegiate Gothic, Modernism, and finally Post-Modernism. More than a virtual tour, this talk will go beyond the beautiful facades and explore the history of the University’s buildings constructed from the 1890s-1990s.
