Peter B. Lewis Library Dedicated, November 20, 2008

November 20, 2008

On November 20, the University celebrated the official dedication of its new state-of-the-art Peter B. Lewis Library, designed for research and teaching in the electronic age.

The building brings together Princeton’s science libraries and many technological facilities, and its soaring walls of glass and curved steel add a bold contemporary dimension to the architecture of the campus.

On hand for the festivities were Peter B. Lewis ’55 (at the podium), whose gift of $60 million launched the project in 2001, and its architect, Frank Gehry (seated left; on right, University Librarian Karin A. Trainer and President Shirley M. Tilghman).

“This library makes a powerful statement about Princeton’s commitment to excellence in the sciences,” said Lewis, whose pioneering gifts include $101 million for the creative and performing arts, $35 million for the Lewis-Sigler Institute for Integrative Genomics, and several gifts related to the arts.

“Frank Gehry and Peter Lewis . . . have given the sciences and Princeton as a whole much more than a building. They have given us a new–and limitless–source of inspiration, and for this I offer them my warmest thanks,” said President Shirley M. Tilghman.
