Princeton poised to celebrate its 276th birthday

October 17, 2022

Tigers around the world are sifting through their orange and black finery and getting ready to participate in the second annual Orange & Black Day, a new Princeton tradition commemorating the signing of the University’s charter and celebrating the pride and spirit Princetonians share for the University. This year marks Princeton’s 276th birthday.

While the call to action for participating in Orange & Black Day is simple — wear orange and black, take a photo and post to social media or a kudoboard — alumni are taking things a step further, as Tigers often do, planning festive gatherings in their regions and inviting their fellow alumni to join the fun. An on-campus celebration is also planned for Orange & Black Day Eve.

Approximately 80 alumni groups, including nine international clubs and 15 classes, have requested party packs, created by Alumni Engagement to encourage alumni to celebrate with their fellow alumni closer to home. The party packs contain orange-and-black swag to decorate their event venues, which range from breweries to alumni homes to parks and even a ride on a Ferris wheel — the sky’s the limit!

More than 80 alumni groups have requested party packs to host regional Orange & Black Day celebrations.

To complement the many activities and parties, members of the Alumni Council’s Communications and Technology committee curated a Virtual Party Pack, a collection of recipes, podcasts, playlists and social media templates that alumni can use to get into the orange-and-black spirit.

Here’s what a handful of clubs are planning:

  • The Princeton Club of Dallas-Fort Worth (PCDFW) is hosting two events: a Recent Alumni happy hour at Katy Trail Ice House, a local brewery; and a family-friendly event for Tiger cubs at Fairfax Park.
  • Alumni in the Tokyo region will meet in Komaba Park in Tokyo for a potluck party.
  • The Class of 2021 is hosting nine events across the country.
  • The Princeton Alumni Association of Nevada is taking a ride together on the largest observation wheel in North America, the High Roller at The LINQ in Las Vegas.
  • The Association of Latino Princeton Alumni will celebrate at the Cactus Cantina in northwest Washington, D.C.
  • The Princeton Club in Northern California is celebrating at a new park called Tunnel Tops Park in San Francisco.
  • Alumni have been invited to bring their oldest or most unusual Princeton item to the party hosted by the Princeton Club of South Carolina, Hilton Head. The group is celebrating at a community center with Tiger cupcakes and trivia games.
  • Twelve recent alumni classes are planning celebrations.
  • The Princeton Club of Northwestern New Jersey and the Princeton Women’s Network of Northern New Jersey are partnering to host two parties: the first will be held at a local brewery and then the party will continue at the home of an alum later that day.
  • The Princeton Club of Washington plans a casual celebration, with appetizers and drinks at a tavern.
  • The Princeton Club of Austin is also hosting a family-friendly party at Jester Club Park.

Previously planned Orange & Black Day activities on campus have been cancelled.

On Saturday, Oct. 22, on Orange & Black Day, alumni are reminded to post their photos and videos, tagging @Princeton Alumni and using #Princeton276 and #TigersRising. Those without social media can post on the kudoboard. No social media presence is required.

Let’s all wish Princeton a very happy orange-and-black 276th birthday!
