Princetonians from every decade are invited back to campus for Alumni Day on Saturday, February 19. Among the festivities for this mid-winter gathering, the University will bestow the James Madison Medal on Pulitzer Prize-winning music composer Julia Wolfe *12, and the Woodrow Wilson Award on Nobel laureate Maria A. Ressa ’86, co-founder of the Philippines-based online news organization Rappler.com.
The Woodrow Wilson Award annually honors an undergraduate alumna or alumnus whose career embodies the call to duty in Wilson’s 1896 speech, “Princeton in the Nation’s Service.” Wilson, a Princeton graduate and faculty member, served as president of the University, governor of New Jersey and president of the United States.
The Madison Medal, established by the Association of Princeton Graduate Alumni (APGA), is named for the fourth president of the United States, James Madison, who is also considered Princeton’s first graduate student. The award is presented each year to celebrate a Graduate School alumna or alumnus who has had a distinguished career, advanced the cause of graduate education or achieved an outstanding record of public service.
The University also plans to announce this year’s winners of the Pyne Prize and Jacobus Fellowships, the top honors for Princeton undergraduate and graduate students, respectively. Following the awards ceremony, alumni are encouraged to support local businesses and enjoy lunch on their own in town, in lieu of a luncheon. At 3 p.m., the Service of Remembrance will begin in the University Chapel to honor the alumni, students and members of the University faculty and staff whose deaths were recorded by the University during 2020 and 2021. Alumni are also invited to leave a “virtual carnation” or memorial message to honor a Princetonian who passed away in the last year.
Princeton is requiring that all attendees attest that they are fully vaccinated – which includes a booster for those who are eligible – as part of the registration process and to wear a mask while indoors. Alumni not planning to come back to campus can participate in all Alumni Day events by watching the livestream beginning at 10 a.m. No registration is required to participate online.
